Lyra took a few moments to come up with an answer. Did he really care, or was he just trying to make her feel better? Then again, what did it matter? It wasn't like she could stay much longer. Every minute she delayed only brought the inevitable closer. She'd have to leave before that happened, before he got hurt. With a mental sigh, she found her voice. Lyra didn't think of herself as very brave, despite her past, and it took all her courage to meet his eyes when she spoke.

"I asked you a similar question last night," she said evenly. "You responded with an 'I'm fine'." Meeting his eyes with a touch of defiance, she went on. "Very well, that makes us equal on that point. Look, Sir, there's no use in worrying yourself with things that you can't help, okay?" If the nightmares were the most of her worries, she would probably sing. As it was, there were other matters that were far more important that she had to focus on. The problem of the amulet and the wounded vampire, for instance, were a lot more important to dreams or feelings which would amount to nothing in the end.

He nodded. "Very well." That was all he said. He turned back to the dragon and vampire and spoke over his shoulder. "Between you and i...i'd think i am a bit more capable of handling the monsters chasing you...seeing as i have spent every year of my life since age six hunting them..." He stalked of silently.

Upon reaching the dragon and vampire he spoke again. "Vampire...your wounds...may i tend to them?"

Kazaryl looked at Dante waiting for his answer.

Why couldn't they even have a conversation? Why did the darned Legacy have to be so full of himself? He'd spent his past years hunting, she'd spent them running. Big deal! She hated killing things. She swung around and her eyes lit upon Wolf and the vampire. He wouldn't be alone now and he had a dragon for company now. There was no more reason for her to stay.

"A poultice of snakeroot and poppy seeds will help him," she said emotionlessly, walking past their small group. She'd made up her mind, there was no point in hanging around. "May the sun light your paths."

With that, she was gone, out into the storm. This time, she did not look back. While she couldn't leave, she couldn't stay either. It was too much and her world weary mind could only take so much. She hardly noticed the wind that battered against her or the snow that nearly blinded her. It didn't seem relevant. And she knew this forest and it knew her. While within the shelter of the trees, she was protected in some small way. As she walked, she refused to think on what had just happened over the past two sunrises. She couldn't deal with it right now.

Erin rolled his eyes and sighed. "Shadow...Track! She's more of a handful than that rabid homunculus three years back..."

Erin rummaged around his medicine bag and pulled out the snake root and poppy seeds and made a poultice out of them.

"Will you allow me to treat you, vampire?" Erin asked carefully. He was wary. he'd had more than his fair share of run-ins with vampires...and those encounters usually did not end well.

Lyra had no intention of returning back to the cave, unfortunately for Erin and his dire wolf. As she plowed on through the snow, her mind gradually cleared. With a quick glance back, she turned slightly to the northwest. Walking in a straight line would be more than unintelligent if Erin foolishly decided to send Shadow after her. Out in the weather though, the snow was already freezing her trail and burying her tracks. That was good. For a while now, she'd managed to disappear from sight and she intended to keep it that way. Most who were still interested in the amulet probably assumed that she was heading north, however, after leaving Scopulous. It was a predictable move, but one that she had been confident about. Lapidem was not an easy place to penetrate and the mountains offered sanctuary.

She shivered, unable to shake off the feeling that she was being watched. Her skin tingled in awareness of something that didn't belong, but what? Only the howling of the wind and the creaking of giant trees greeted her ears... but she was growing more than certain that that couldn't be all. There was another presence close by, hostile, armed. Suddenly it clicked and she knew why she was sensing them. Iron. The treacherous metal that was the enemy of all Elves and would undoubtedly bring about their final destruction. She was half Elemental, but that didn't guarantee that she would survive if she took a blow from a weapon made of the metal.

A second later, she dropped behind the forlorn stump of a tree only just in time. The wind was to her back and that made the cruel arrow that had been fired travel all the faster. With a dull thunk, it sank into a limb where her head had just been. They must have been waiting for her to get out in the open; she'd been right to leave when she had. She flicked a pointed ear in disgust as anger sharpened her and she rose to her feet with the swiftness of a deer. A second arrow missed her by inches and all the nerves lit up on the right side of her body in response to the iron.

She was unarmed, carried no weapon unless absolutely necessary. Instead, she used fire. As the third arrow came streaking towards her, she ducked under it and her head felt like it was about to split open as she charged the archer. Flames flared around her body, white hot and deadly, and her eyes seemed to burn with an inner fire of their own. There was a sound of surprise and now she could detect the small sounds of him scrambling for another arrow. By then, it was already too late.

Iron; the man reeked of it. More than likely he was a scout, sent ahead of the others to judge the situation and had decided to make an ambitious move. Well, he had come prepared at least. He dropped his bow as she closed in, which was a bad move on his part. If he had wanted to finish her off right there and then, a final arrow would have done it. She saw a knife being drawn, sensed where his blow would land, and only narrowly avoided it. She kicked his feet out from under him and the man went down, screaming as his clothes caught fire. The knife lay forgotten as he fought to put out the demonic flames. The volume of the scream rose with his agony and she decided to end it; she took no pleasure in watching his suffering. The flames burned with a new ferocity as she made a quick, slicing gesture through the air and he was silenced. The body smoldered and within the minute, all that was left was a pile of ash and the wind was already blowing it away. Seven iron arrow-head winked up at her from the ruins and she stumbled back.

"Goddess forgive both our sins," Lyra murmured before turning away. She made no move to disguise the fight. If the others in his party caught up, it would serve as a warning.

Thankfully for her, the encounter had completely driven Erin from her mind and she set a quicker pace through the snow, almost running now. She had to get away, far away. She hated herself for having killed him, but what choice had he left her? That was no justification, and she knew it too. A cruel reminder, the amulet throbbed against her skin as she allowed it to absorb the traces of her aura.

Shadow heard the scream and bolted towards the source. It took him several moments to get there, and by the time he did, Lyra was gone again. He sniffed that area around the corpse and growled. The elf girl had been attacked. He turned towards the direction he attacker had come from. He smelled three more humans…he decided to take them out of the equation…permanently.

He slipped through the wintry landscape like his name, little more than a shadow among shadows. The scent of the humans became stronger and stronger as the unwittingly came within range of the massive wolf.

Shadow’s coat shifted to become paler than the moon. He looked for the entire world to be a giant mound of snow.

The humans walked by the dire wolf not realizing that death lay in wait just a few feet away from them. Shadow rose as silent as night and began to stalk the last member of the group of humans…they were walking single file. The man realized something was wrong and whirled around… just in time to find himself eye to eye with the huge dire wolf. He never had a chance to scream before his head was inside Shadow’s jaws. Shadow spat out what was left and charged the other two just as they turned to see their companion’s headless body fall to the ground with a fleshy thud. Shadow roared, blood still dripping from his toothy maw and he pounced on the nearest of the two remaining humans, his massive paws making short work of the man’s soft flesh. The man was quickly disemboweled and screaming as he died, his blood staining the surrounding alabaster snow a sickening vermilion.

Shadow faced the last human, his muzzled dyed and matter with gore. He met the other’s eyes…and realized that the other wasn’t a he, rather, he faced a she.

Now this presented a bit of a problem…Shadow disliked killing females…he paused and tried to work out whether he should just scare the human…or tear her to pieces…

She took the decision from him. She notched an iron tipped arrow and let it fly. The quarrel slammed into his left shoulder and buried itself deep in his muscle.

Shadow howled, not necessarily in pain, thought that was part of it, but in anger. This pathetic excuse for a two-legs just shot him…HIM…a dire wolf…and not just any dire wolf, but HIM…Shadow…He leaped and practically flew through the air towards her.

A few moments later, Shadow strode out from the ambush site and cleaned his bloody muzzle and paws with fresh snow. That done, he turned back towards the direction Lyra had gone. Every step he took, he took with a slight limp. The arrow was not too bad, but did slow him down a wee bit, but only cause it was a lucky shot and had hit a muscle group.

Shadowed went after the elf girl because Erin had told him too. And besides, it’d take too long to get back to Erin to get the quarrel removed and THEN go after Lyra…so better to just go to the elf girl and hope she could get the arrow out…

After several hours, Shadow was within visual range of Lyra. He decided that he might as well just walk with her rather than behind her…and he DID need to get the arrow out…He howled to make his presence known, hoping that the call would alert her to the fact that it was him and in hopes that she wouldn’t attack him on sight.

The arrow had dried blood that caused his fur to mat all around the wound, though the wound itself had frozen over. He growled as he took another step. The pain was getting slightly worse now.

He padded towards the elf girl and then waited to see how she’d react.

Lyra would have been an extremely pitiful excuse for a Legacy if she had not overheard the din of the battle. She stoppeed dead, ears pricked. Shadow. It was definitely the dire wolf that was leading an attack of some sort and it was an attack, she was sure of it. Good Goddess, he must have heard the scream of the man she'd killed and thought it was her or something. Horrified, she spun around and started making her way back.

The sounds of struggle died down and she stopped again. A moment later, Shadow's furry face loomed into view. Standing stock-still, she eyed him warily. So Erin sent his dire wolf after her, had he? Her eyes traveled over the wolf and saw that his left shoulder was wounded. The shaft of an arrow just stuck out of his shoulder and guilt slammed into her like a physical blow. She covered her face with her hands miserably, then let them drop. She straightened up.

"Want me to take a look at that for you, Shadow?" She looked at him sadly, half expecting an answer or to show some sign that he had understood, for the huge wolf was not unintelligent.

Why had Erin sent Shadow after her? He had said that she could go and that he wouldn't stop her, so why? She could have kicked herself for being stupid and just walking away. What was she supposed to do? Lyra wanted to help and she'd thought that it'd be best to do that by leaving as quickly as possible. And now Shadow had been shot. Wait. She stiffened. Iron wouldn't hurt Shadow like it would her, she knew that and as long as she didn't directly touch the metal, she would be okay and she wasn't one to just leave the arrow in him when it was clearly causing the wolf pain. That'd be cruel, to cause him discomfort any longer than was absolutely neccessary and he'd clearly been walking on the leg too. That was bad. There'd be swelling to deal with and the arrowhead was probably serrated. Great Goddess, why did she always have to be hurting everybody?

Shadow looked at her, and growled lightly, almost as if he were asking what direction she wanted to go. He shook snow from his coat and let it revert back to it's smoky gray color. He walked up to her and brushed against her affectionately. He wasn't about to let her wander off alone without him again. He licked her hand and looked up at her hoping she wouldn't try to send him away, because he wouldn't leave her.

Lyra sighed. Oh Shadow, she thought sadly. It's better for you and your master if you let me go. There was nothing to be done about it though, not if Erin didn't want her to leave. She didn't want to think about that right now though. She didn't want to be falling for Erin when it would only cause him grief.

"I'm gonna take a look at that for you, Shadow," Lyra said. "That okay with you?"

With a sigh, she washed the blood off his shoulder to the best of her ability and parted the matted hairs. With gentle fingers, she pulled the arrow from his shoulder. She she did so, her fingertips brushed against something hard. A huge shock went up her arm and she dropped the arrow, moving quickly to the side and clutching her hand. White hot pain burned her hand and her fingers were turning black. At least she hadn't gotten cut with it. The bout would be over by the morrow, but she wasn't looking forward to the meanwhile. With a grimace, she gestured to Shadow.

"Come on," she said quietly. "We ought to get back."

She started walking back towards the cave, trying to make herself believe that the pain was nothing. That she could deal with it. And she could too... She just had to believe she could.

Shadow winced when she pulled the bolt free of his flesh. He clenched his teeth and ground his paws into the snow. He felt better afterwards though and rubbed against her in gratitude.

As they walked back towards the cave Shadow noticed her hand didn't look good. He whined at her sensing her pain. Shadow kept nudging her, as if to ask if she was alright. He even tired to offer her a chance to ride on his back to get back to the cave.

Lyra refused the offers of the dire wolf to aid her. She gritted her teeth and kept her eyes fixed ahead, ignoring her hand. She would be fine. It wasn't as if she'd been stabbed with a knife made out of the foul stuff, which probably would have been lethal. Compared to that idea, this was minor. The wolf was worrying unnecessarily. If she had been pure Elf, she knew that she probably would be on the ground in the fetal position, in too much pain to move.

She blinked rabidly as her vision blurred for a moment and she stumbled. With a shake of her head, the images sharpened again and she moved along. Move along, move along. They would be at the cave soon. Before the arrow, she hadn't been conscious of the storm, the cold, the pounding wind. Now she found herself almost numb. Shivering, she plowed on obstinately. The snow stung her eyes, the wind tearing at her as if trying to blow her away. The wolf was looking concerned, but she didn't want his help nor anyone else's for that matter. She just wanted to go to sleep and forget the world for a while... Ha, as if. At last, her eyes made out the warm glow of a fire through the swirling snow.

Lyra tossed her head. Wolf. Well, he'd gotten what he'd wanted and she was back... unfortunately. More than likely, he'd end up regretting it but there was nothing to be done about that now. A sudden rush of dizziness overcame her and she swayed slightly as she made her way to the cave with Shadow. And then she was there, ducking slightly to enter and then straightening up. Dragon, warrior, and vampire were almost exactly as she had left them. Erin looked annoyed and she resisted the urge to slap him. It wasn't hard, because the thought flitted out of her head almost as soon as it entered.

"Shadow's back," she said coldly, somehow managing to keep the pain out of her voice. Her hand was really starting to cause her agony now that there wasn't anything else to focus on and she was alone with the pain.

She turned her back on him, careful to keep her hand out of sight, and sat down. A shudder ran through her, but she made not a sound.

Erin noticed Lyra return and was surprised. What is she doing back here? Shadow was to stay with her till she made it to the next town... Shadow walked in behind her with a slight limp. Oh...there he is...and he's injured?

"Lyra?" He looked at her for a moment then back to Shadow. "You okay boy?" Erin looked at the arrow wound. "How'd you get this Shadow? And where's the bolt?"

Shadow just stared at Lyra, as if she were the answer to all of Erin's questions. "Huh? What about her, boy?" Erin glanced at her, she was pretty as ever, but something seemed different. "Did you help Shadow by pulling out the arrow?"

Lyra heard Erin speak, but he was addressing his wolf. Her head pounded and sweat dampened her brow. Another spasm wracked her and she bit her lip until the blood came, squeezing her eyes shut. Colors blurred and ran together and the pain made her want to black out. Perhaps it would have been better to do so, but instinct told her to cling to reality for as long as possible. The salamander amulet glowed with steady radiance under her shirt. Unknown to her, it was doing everything it could to drive the taint of iron out.

She let out a slow breath, trying to clear her mind. As she did so, she heard Erin addressing her. Good timing... sort of. It would have been better if she just left her alone for the time being so she could concentrate, but a semi-friendly face would be welcome... she supposed. She didn't know what to make of him right now.

"I pulled it out," she said tightly through gritted teeth. Great, she probably sounded angry, but there was a reason that she was keeping her back to him. She didn't want him to see what it was she was going through. She didn't want to look weak.

Erin nodded. "Thank you...it pains me when Shadow comes back like a living pincushion...I am in your debt for taking care of him...he is very dear to me..." Erin noticed her grimace and was by her side in an instant. "Are you alright?" He noticed she seemed pale, and that usually indicated shock...He touched her arm and noticed it was cool and clammy..."You aren't injured too are you?" He asked, concern filling his voice.

"I'm..." For a second, Lyra considered saying 'I'm fine'. She wasn't wounded, in all honesty... but she didn't know how else to describe it. "Shadow's the one whose wounded," she said thickly.

Her tongue felt like a lump of meat in her mouth and she felt oh, so tired. Pain dug little claws into her, but she tried to brush it aside, to block it from her mind. Cradling her arm against her, she groaned as another spasm wracked her mind and body. White hot fire licked at her and she knew without looking that her hand was burned black. It spread no further however. Hunched over and teetering on the edge of blacking out, she made a last, desperate move. If the amulet absorbed energy... then could it absorb more abstract concepts? Feeling, emotion... Maybe...

She jerked the amulet from around her neck and dropped it into her right hand. Instantly, the fingers of that hand closed around it so tightly that the veins showed white through the black of the iron taint. Warm light seeped steadily out and she shuddered as the pain flared up again and then receded. It was in no ways gone and she was almost no closer to being healed, but the theory was working. Her mind was clearing. Unfortunately, she couldn't hold out much longer. Soon... she'd have to give in.

Lyra's dull gaze flickered to Erin. "Stop looking so worried," she said hoarsely. "I'll be fine."

Erin shook his head ignoring the comment. "Dante! Kazaryl, Clear the floor over there! Get mt medical kit. Lyra is ill." Erin left the two to clear a space as he reached out and pulled her arm towards him finally seeing the damage that had been done to her. He did his best to resist letting his immense concern show through, but failed.

"Here, let's get you over to somewhere you can lay down...somewhere we can fix that hand of yours up, alright?" He offered her his hand.

Kazaryl pushed bags and gear and other miscellaneous items out of the way so as to make a clear space on the floor for the elf. He was amused at how drawn the warrior was to this elf...thought the warrior hadn't realized it yet Kazaryl could see it in the warrior's eyes.

"I'm fine," Lyra snapped defensively, not taking his hand. She didn't want his pity. So she'd touched some iron, big deal?! He could stop pretending that he cared. "It'll be gone... by... by morning." Yes, like her, it would be all over by morning. Second try at leaving... and she couldn't risk failing this time. She couldn't afford to let him see that she'd rather stay more than anything else, couldn't have him find out that she wanted to accept his help but didn't dare.

The effort of speaking was proving too much for her though, and she shivered. Her hand was slowly fading to dark grey and she knew that it would be all over by the time the sun rose next. She dropped her gaze from his face and her body went limp as she collapsed at last. Despite the fact that she had just lost consciousness, her hand still kept a strong grip on the amulet.

Erin smiled at her stubbornness, Goddess this elf was strong willed. Then she passed out. He swore. Erin reached out to catch her before she fell over and gently carried her over to the clear patch of ground ant lay her down. He took her discolored hand in his and held it a moment, the heat from his hand flowing into hers. Erin wondered if his powers would help her? He had the ability to negate magic...Could that help her here? He drew Deathblade and held it in front of him questioning whether or not he could risk it...iron killed elves...he guessed she'd be dead by morning...and if his plan worked, she'd live...and if it failed? She'd end up dying in his arms...

He growled and decided to give it a try. He placed the flat of the blade against her tainted hand and summoned his powers...flames rippled out from him and about him, but the blade shone, as it did when she used the amulet before, it's other magical properties had been triggered and it was doing something...but Erin had no idea if it was helping her. The weapon glowed for several long moments and then dimmed...Erin replaced it and hoped it did something useful for her..he stayed by her side for the rest of the night, barely sleeping at all.

The amulet grew brighter in response to Deathblade, but then it dimmed slightly when he replaced it. Unlike the Legacy's sword however, it glowed steadily and did not flicker. The light was almost eerie, throwing twisted shadows on the walls. Lyra's theory seemed to be working, for gradually, her mind was able to revive from the onslaught. By the time morning rolled around, she was back to normal, physically at least. She felt fine, but her mind was moving at a snail's pace. She saw Erin, but didn't really register him as... well... Erin. Instead, all she knew was that she was tired, cold, and felt as if someone had kicked her off a cliff. She crawled over to him and put her head in his lap. A moment later, she drifted into a natural sleep.

Erin awoke to find Lyra Clear-Waters with her head in his lap sleeping soundly. All the others around him were asleep as well. He looked down at her and placed a hand on her cheek, seeing if she still felt cool to the touch. She was warm again. Erin let out the breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding.

How had this elf girl made such an impression on him so quickly? He shook his head and left life's little mysteries to there own devices. He stroked her hair gently with one hand and lifted her previously blackened hand with his other.

"It's...healed..." He looked at her pale hand in surprise...something had healed her...and was was fairly sure it hadn't been him...at least, not completely...

He held her hand in his, his warmth flowing into her. He shook his head...he must be going soft or something. He grinned. He had always lived life a little too close to the edge of catastrophe...Why stop now?

He smiled and slipped back to sleep, her hand firmly held in his.

Lyra woke up not long afterwards. She had no memory of the last time she'd woken, which was unfortunate. Her head was clearer, but not by much. Whether good or bad, she did not immediately jerk upright and look wildly around. Instead, she slowly became aware of her surroundings again. Things kept winking in and out of focus, but eventually, she could make sense of things. She became away that the fire had died down and that she was oddly warm. Frowning, her disoriented mind tried to figure out while. Then she got it. The hand that held the amulet seemed to have vanished Erin's large, callused one. He was holding it gently, but firmly too. Her head was nestled in his lap and she got the feeling that he probably hadn't put it there. Great, she must've woken up sometime back and crawled over to him. Good thing there couldn't have been anything else, because she definitely would have remembered it.

With a sigh, she worked the amulet out of her hand without letting go of him and it dropped to the floor. She reached across his warm body and picked it up, lifting her head slightly to put it on again. She didn't want to wake him and spoil it, so she relaxed again and pretended to be asleep. If it was a dream, she never wanted to wake.

Erin feels his leg going numb. He opens his eyes, but only just. The sun was just rising in the sky, and he'd slept away the night with Lyra laying in his lap. Erin shifted slightly. He needed to stretch his leg out, but refused to move if would disturb Lyra.

He sat and looked at her face. She was better now. That was certain. He gently examined the hand she had injured. He nodded to himself sure that she was better now.

"Lyra?" He spoke softly, so as not to wake the others.

"I'm up," Lyra muttered, opening first one eye and then the other. She sat up, slowly so that she wouldn't make herself dizzy and blinked. The world swam back into focus and her eyes drifted over to Erin. Well, it was probably about to be really awkward with him in the near immediate future. Ah well. She could pin that on the idiot who shot Shadow... but she had only whoever had employed this particular band... Then again, who was the one responsible for possessing the amulet? Her. Ah well, looks like she'd have to take credit for this if and when things were to go amiss.

She met his eyes, couldn't hold his gaze, and dropped her gaze. She didn't know what to say.

Erin noticed her look away. He wasn't surprised...he was a rather imposing figure, or so he was told...She probably though he looked freakish or some such.

He sighed. He hoped she didn't find him TOO monstrous...but that was a bit much to hope for...she had been dazed and confused...last night ws nothing but a mistake on her part...so Erin didnt take it too personally...at least...that was the idea...in truth, couldn't quite believe that it was a mistake and couldnt help but wonder why she crawled over to him of all people....a killer and monster...a dark angel of justice...one who was always moving and evading assassins and monsters that sough to kill or devour him...

"Are you...well?" He cursed himself. That was a stupid thing to ask...

He stood slowly, stretched his legs and rolled his shoulders to get the soreness out of them. "I was...worried...you were," He paused and looked away, "dying..." He looked anywhere but at her. He fidgeted with his ring, the one that had the howling wolf emblazoned on it with it's ruby red eyes that seemed to swirl with fire from deep within. He avoided mentioning anything about her ending up in his lap...what was he supposed to say in a situation like this? He didnt interact much with people, beyond avoiding being killed by them...

Lyra watched him stand up with shadowed eyes, then climbed to her own feet as well. It was best to head out early. There was a barrage of confused feelings and emotions battling inside her, and some of what she was feeling bled through onto her face. She usually did what she could to keep her face expressionless, a closed book, but at times when she was weak like now, her mental defenses were lax. Some odd emotion registered in her eyes when she looked at him that betrayed her heart. A moment later, the shutters closed on her eyes and they were back to their usual look of troubled contemplation.

Her heart faltered a little at his words. He thought...? Well, she wasn't surprised; iron did terrible things to Elves.

"Oh Erin," she cried sadly. Before reality could intrude, she crossed to him and pulled him into a hug. "I... I'm sorry... I didn't mean to scare you."
