| As soon as the man left his field of vision, Christian takes to the trees. He quickly scrambles up it, and starts jumping from branch to branch. If you were to be an assassin, you had to know how to leave a scene without a trace. This was particularly easy for Christian because he was always a good free-runner. He had excellent balance and was very flexible, thus allowing him to be able to launch himself from tree-to-tree without slipping and falling to his death. He easily catches up to the man.
“How is punching that tree working out for you?” he yells, laughing. Before he gives the man a chance to respond, he is flying through the trees again. Ah, soon, so soon he would be destroying another innocent soul. He could feel the adrenaline already starting to rush through him. Quickly and quietly, he fades off into the snowstorm.

| Gael ignored the man. Punching the tree had at least let out some of his pent up emotions, which was all that he needed right now. However, it wouldn't solve his problems. He had to keep going. The problem was that he had no idea where the assassin was no and if he intended him harm. With a shiver, he forced himself to keep going. He had to get what had just happened out his head, otherwise he'd never be able to sleep without having nightmares again. He knew that that was likely not to happen, but whatever. He'd deal with it later.
He took a last look around, taking stock of his surroundings. Without further ado, the werewolf headed off through the trees. The snow swirled around his thin body, screening him from view as he melted into the forest as softly as a shadow.

| Beatrix was in deer form. Her coat was shiny; she was too well fed to remain a deer. She did enjoy it, though, the feeling that you could jump and run forever.....With a strange sound that was similar to a sigh, she changed. Her full grown doe body lengthened and straightened, reaching towards the sky. Her fur disappeared to be replaced by pale skin. The doe had become a human girl. The girl, whose long, wavy hair was the color of an autumn sunset and eyes the color of the sun began to walk, realizing it was too cold to move. She was heading west, towards the village, in hopes of finding new clothes. The clothes she had were thin and full of holes. It was very hard to find pants that would fit her human body, but she refused to wear dresses. Who could wear something as confining as a dress when one had been a trout fish? She trudged through the snow. The first thing I'm going to buy is new shoes, and then new socks... she thought, aware of the cold, wet snow that creeped into her shoes. All of the sudden, she stopped. She listened. She started walking again. Then she stopped again and listened. There was something...Most definitely something...Something was near her! Something big and dangerous....She listened again, not moving a single muscle. She had practiced many, many years to master the art of stillness and listening. One gets bored when one has to travel alone...A man! It was a man nearby! It was better than a bear, but by no means good. What kind of man would be in this weather? She moved as silently as possible towards a nearby evergreen tree. Despite the pointy bark that poked into her skin, she effortlessly climbed the tree until she was at least twenty feet up. She then began climbing from tree to tree. She wanted to change into falcon form, but if he was a hunter, she wouldn't last. She quickly caught up to him, but he was walking very fast. Fool, you'll make yourself colder if you sweat. and there's no point in wasting energy unless you have a bear on your tail. Which, in a way, you do. She grinned to herself. The tall man was wearing a cloak, but she could see long and ruffled hair hanging out from it. She lept to another tree. If only he would turn around...show a weapon or something...She was too interested to give up now. | |

| Gael stopped, very suddenly. He heard footsteps. Light and quick, full of life and energy. It wasn't Christian coming back for him, because his footfalls were heavier. Not only that, but these came from behind and the assassin had gone on ahead. He looked around, but could see nothing other than the dark trees, long shadows, and snow that was gray in the fading light. His clothes were thin, but his shiver was not from cold. He was afraid.
It seems strange, almost, for a werewolf to be afraid if one thinks only of the stereotype. Gael, however, was no ordinary werewolf. Even though he had come to a sort of terms with being a monster, that didn't mean that he was in any way happy about it or willing to take advantage of being a monster. Quite the opposite. He hated who, or rather what he was. It wasn't the fact that everyone it seemed either hated or feared him, it was that being a monster meant that he hurt people. It wasn't intentional.. but it happened anyway and there wasn't thing he could do about. Every full moon... once a month... twelve times a year... How would he survive?
The werewolf started moving faster through the trees, wanting to get away, but not sure how. He was almost running now. The footsteps were still there, following him! What was he to do? He had no weapon except his silver and steel knife, but he didn't want to use that thing again today. Not after the terror of the battle. He didn't want to take any more lives today.
Please, he willed silently as he stopped again. He couldn't keep running. Not forever... and there were some things that you just had to face. Please don't be a hostile
With that thought, Gael turned. As he did so, a gust of wind hit him in the face and his hood was blown back. What it exposed as not a pretty sight. A thin, hollow face and eyes that seemed a size too large for it. A wild mane of thick, black hair fell to his shoulders, contrasting oddly with his dead, white face. If it hadn't been for the three enormous scars across the left side of his face, he could have passed for a vampire. There was a hard, cold look to his face, a dark and forbidding quality.
His stomach did a back flop when he saw what had been following him. A woman only a few years younger than himself, though he was sure that bitterness and pain had made him look far older. She was on the short side with flaming red hair and was thinner than he was, an amazing feat in itself. Despite her thin frame, her face was round and full; and, her golden eyes seemed to shimmer, catching the little light that leaked from the sky above and reflecting it back. The thick, arching eyebrows over those golden made him want to smile his amusement, but he couldn't move a muscle. Within the hard mask of his face, he was terrified that he would scare her. The woman looked friendly and he looked anything but. It wasn't quite his fault, he was what his life had forced him to become, but she would be sure to recognize him for werewolf; the scars would be a dead giveaway. Heart hammering, he waited for her reaction.

| The strange mans hood blew back with the chilly wind. Beatrix leaned her head further out of the tree. One of these days I'm going to get myself killed! He stopped to readjust it. Here was her chance! She leaped out of the tree and, with almost inhuman ability, landed with barely a sound. The man turned anyways; he must have seen the movement. She nearly gasped at his haunted face. His cheeks were hollow and his eyes were very large, and he had 3 pale scars on his left cheek. He seemed human, and yet.... She must act. He was staring at her, and she at him, but he was liable to get bored any moment now. So she began to speak.
"Hello. It's very nice to meet you. My name is Beatrix. Do you happen to know of a place to shelter? It's very cold. Aren't you cold? When I first saw you I thought you were a hunter, but you are not dressed well enough and you have no bow or arrows, nor any rope for traps. Do you mind if I ask why you are out here?"
She knew she was rambling, but she need to keep his attention. She shivered from the cold as she waited for the tall man to speak.

| A smile flitted across the werewolf's face, but his heart sank at the same time. He had scared her, he knew he had. Her overly fast voice told him that like nothing else and he could have hit himself. His face closed off again as soon as the smile had passed. The werewolf didn't express emotion very well; and, years of torment had given him an almost permanently cruel look. His face was hard and forbidding, not just disfigured by the giant scars. It was not a pleasant sight, the reason that he kept his hood up all the time. Only the eyes told the truth, for in them was the defeated stare of broken a man.
"Slow down there, girlie," he said, voice rough from lack of use... But he allowed a hint of smile to be present in it. "You can call me Gael, though my parents dubbed me Gaelgathor. I'm not a native here, so it looks like we're in the same boat there." He paused to swallow; his throat was oddly dry. "Yes, it is very cold. You want to borrow my cloak?" he asked, noting her shivering. Before she could answer, he undid the fastening and handed it to her. "It might be a tad big," he said hesitantly.
Her last question, he was hesitant to answer. Gael was trying to make his way to the Sol Mountains, to finally reach a place where he could live without hurting anyone. But how was he supposed to tell her that? How was he supposed to confirm to her that he was the monster that she thought he was. There was nothing else to do though, his honor demanded that. He couldn't just pretend that he was a normal human who had gotten into a scrape with a Dire Wolf. That would have been wrong.
"I'm trying to make it to the Sol Mountains," Gael said, after a few moments. He avoided her distracting, golden eyes. "I'm a werewolf seeking asylum." He braced himself for her reaction.

| Beatrix grinned her widest, and immediately forgot about the cloak. "You're a werewolf? I've never met a werewolf before!" She said, letting her face reveal her ecstasy. "Oh, dear. I don't know the proper etiquette for greeting a werewolf. Tell me, do you speak a different language than regular humans? Can werewolves be part elf or dwarf as well? What does your metamorphosis feel like?" Here she hesitated for a moment, realizing she had stressed the wrong word. Will he suspect what I truly am? It was unlikely; Chimaeras were not common. So she decided to continue. " Is it really every full moon? Do you have to change? Is it painful? Do clear signs that you are part wolf follow you into your human shape? How did you become a werewolf? Were you born that way, or were you bitten? Please tell me everything about being a werewolf, as I have never met one, not once in my life." She grinned pleasantly and waited for a flow of information. It took her a moment before he realized that he was still holding the cloak out. She shrugged and waved her hands in a noncommittal manner. "You keep it on. You need it more than I do." She stared at his expressionless face, waiting for an answer. She looked into his deep brown eyes. Such young eyes, and yet there was something in them.....This man was haunted indeed. She probably shouldn't have asked him so many questions...... | |

| Gael flinched, but he pressed the cloak into her hands gently before answering her. At least she wasn't running, screaming in the opposite direction or trying to kill her. If she had done either, he probably wouldn't have stopped her. After today, there was no question over whether or not he deserved to die.
"It's fine, there is no proper etiquette," he said, rubbing a hand over his shadowed eyes. "Most people would either have tried to kill me by now or be running away as quick as their legs could carry them, so you've got spunk... Werewolves are typically humans, I don't think dwarfs or Elves can be turned." This was so strange for him, no one else had ever had this kind of reaction and he was crazy enough to be telling her about it. About him. Why? Despite his thoughts, he went on in a cold voice that he couldn't help. "We do answer the call of the full moon to undergo a painful transformation into the body of a Dire Wolf until sunrise." At her next question, he smiled again, if only faintly. "You see these scars, girlie? They only come from a werewolf." With a sigh, he ran a hand through his untidy, black hair. "I was bitten when I was fifteen..." Gael looked away as his voice broke. Eight years of perfect hell... She would never understand.

| Beatrix thought for a moment, hardly paying attention to the cloak he had given her. "How long is it until the full moon? Would you mind if I traveled with you until after it happened? And how long does it last? Tell me the story of how you became a werewolf! I love stories..." Beatrix shivered again and looked at the cloak. She extended her arms, intending to give the cloak back. "I thank you greatly for the offer, but to be honest, you won't last as long as I will out here." She looked up at the tall man. "Do you mind if we walk? It's too cold to stand around, cloak or no cloak." | |

| "The full moon is in five more days," Gael said coldly. He had control of himself now and his scarred face was a closed book. There was little doubt in his mind about this, especially when it came to Beatrix. She was far too nice, too innocent, to have to be burdened with that knowledge... And even if she seemed confident, as a werewolf, he would go into a berserker rage; h would kill her once he transformed, given the chance. Even if he didn't want to, he would have no control over his actions whatsoever. That was the way of the world. There wasn't a thing that he could do about it except make sure that he was far away from her when that happened, to do what little he could to try to put her and everyone else out of harm's way.
He gestured for her to walk with him and started off at an easy pace over the snow so that they could talk. "I can tell you about when I was bitten later; now is not a good time."
The werewolf looked at her, very seriously. "When I transform, you will have to promise me to be as far away as you can. A werewolf would kill his best friend if he stood in his way; it isn't something that we can control. As soon as the moon rises, we go mad." He wasn't trying to be mean, but his voice came out hard and cold. He had spent too much of his time alone and in a constant state of hiding his emotions that no matter how he might feel, he always looked cruel and forbidding. On the bright side, there was always the chance that she would get scared of him in human form as well as wolf and'd take his advice and leave. Her life depended on getting away from him.

| "Oh, you don't need to worry about me" Beatrix smiled reassuringly. "Tell me, do you have any powers, like say, supernatural jumping ability? Flying? Because that's really all I need to know to stay safe." Beatrix knew she was getting a little close to her secret, but he would only be the seventh person to find out, so it wouldn't be the end of the world. But he would probably be terribly scared. He seemed too human to be a shapeshifter, even if he had only one shape.... She continued smiling as she walked. What a wonderful day this was! | |

| "No," Gael shook his head. Her questions were starting to make him uneasy, but she wouldn't be able to tell from just looking at him; his cruel and harsh features gave nothing away. "I wish I had special abilities, but all I am is a monster." His voice sounded flat and faintly angry, even though he wasn't. He was worried, yes, but he wasn't mad at her. Beatrix seemed pretty happy-go-lucky, so he doubted that he could make her feel bad just by being forbidding. Too bad too, she was nice.
Gael pushed aside a tree branch, held it aside for her and continued on. "It would have been really useful when I was still living in my village, to be able to have powers, my folks might still be alive. However, I can only transform during the time of the full moon and I can't control anything I do while in wolf form... It's a lose-lose situation."

| Beatrix gasped. He had no family. She herself was not one to care too much about the short lives of non-chimaeras, but she knew how much humans cared about families. It was very important to them....Perhaps if she tried to empathize..."If it helps you feel any better, I don't have a family anymore either. They all died a very long time ago." She smiled again as a question occurred to her. "Do werewolves live longer than humans?" "And really, you shouldn't worry about me. I know it looks like I'll die the moment you go wolf, but really, I can take care of myself. I'll be fine. I wish I could help you though..." She added "I wish it didn't have to be so painful..." She couldn't imagine a world where she couldn't shift shapes quickly, easily and painlessly...Beatrix blinked her golden eyes. Poor fellow. Must be living some kind of demented nightmare. She thought about what he had said. "All I am is a monster" Beatrix stopped and said with conviction " You are not a monster. That I know." | |

| "You and I both wish," Gael said darkly. He ducked under a low hanging branch, the snow crunching under his boots, his black hair blown back from his gaunt face by the frigid wind, stinging his dark eyes. He was thin, but he walked with a predatory gait and he looked dangerous. There was just something about him that was different, out of place. Perhaps it was the confident, but cautious stride. It was the hard and ominous face, but the broken spirit. Just looking at him, even without knowing what he was, it was clear that he was burdened.
"I've killed people, Beatrix. My own family died because of me and I was too weak to save them." His voice was bitter at the memory. This was just great. He had doubled his death toll today and now was digging up his past all over again. The memories rose fresh and sharp in his mind's eye and he wished that there was something he could do to make it up. There was nothing though... He was a werewolf; there was little to nothing good that he could offer the world.

| Beatrix was very cold now. She felt next to no sympathy for this man, and why should she? He was just a stranger with a mortal lifespan. Yes, he could be considered handsome, but so what? He was a mortal. What made him special was that he was a mortal werewolf. Otherwise she would never have offered to walk with him. She could have found shelter by now, if she could have shifted...That's it. "What we need is a map. Oh! Look at that over there! Is that a map in the snow? Let me go and see." Beatrix pretended, knowing that she was a terrible actor. She walked over to a clump of pines, skirted around behind them and morphed into a barn owl. She then flew up high above, trying not to bring attention to the owl in the daytime. Aha! Just over the ridge! A cave! She flew back down as fast as she could, landed behind the tree, morphed back into a human girl and walked back out from the clump of trees looking sad. "There wasn't a map. But I think we should keep walking towards that ridge over there." Beatrix grinned, ever glad that she was born a Chimaera. | |

| Gael looked disbelievingly at her. That was the worst lie someone had ever told him, including the time that that girl in the market had told him she wasn't afraid. Yeah, right. He had seen the terror written in every line of her young face. Beatrix wasn't scared though, and that bothered him for some reason. He felt safer, for some reason, when people avoided him. It didn't exactly make him happier, but at least it meant that there was a pretty good chance that he wouldn't end up killing them. But Beatrix wanted to see it happen, he guessed. She wasn't frightened, but curious and that curiosity wouldn't be slated through mere explanations. Good Goddess, what was he supposed to do?
When she came back, he looked at her skeptically, but made no comment about the obviously non-existent map. Instead, he just nodded. "Lead on," was all he said. If this was a trap, he had no objection to walking in so stupidly. If it wasn't... then maybe he could trust her. Trust. Ha. What a silly concept in this sad story, in the saddest of all words. In his world, trusting people generally didn't end up being a very smart idea. It either got them killed or him betrayed... usually the latter. Maybe she would be different, but he had learned the hard way not to get his hopes up.

| They walked for an hour and a half. The sun was almost gone by the time they arrived at the cave. "There now. I told you we should go over the ridge." Beatrix grinned. "Let's go in!" Beatrix marched into the cave without hesitation. The cave was big, very big. It was about a man and a half tall at the entrance and the floor was relatively flat. There were signs that someone had lived there, but there was no one living there now. Beatrix sat down. "It's not much, but it's better than what we did have." Beatrix sat for a moment. "Well, I guess we have until morning. Tell me the story now." | |

| Gael followed her, if warily, into the cave. The opening was small and he had to duck his head to make it in, but once they were inside it spread out and he could see that it extended on for quite a while. How far, he wasn't certain, but felt that it was of little consequence. The cave looked like it had seen human life in it before, but he was getting an idea, if only a faint one, that he wasn't the only nonhuman around here.
He sat down cautiously, but had only just got himself situated when Beatrix asked him a question... well, not a question really, but a request if not a demand. Tell me the story... Did he want to? Could he bring himself to remember those details, to relive it all? The werewolf slid a sideways glance at Beatrix's eager face. With a sigh of defeat, he passed a hand wearily over his face. Okay. He would tell her... he just hoped that he wouldn't regret it.
"I'm from Paludem, and more specifically, a little village in the south of the realm called Ellianaya..." He paused, studying the cave floor and avoiding her eyes, though it wasn't intentional. "I was restless, as a child. Most of my childhood I spent wandering the various shores and wetlands, almost as if I was searching for something which I could not name. Whatever the case, I was returning home one night with my father's fishing nets when it happened." Gael shivered, not from the temperature, but from a sudden coldness deep within himself. He'd been only fifteen... and his life had ended before it had time to begin.

| Gael looked uneasy. Beatrix wondered why. She had given him no cause to be uneasy or unhappy, and she had taken great care not too annoy him too much either. Either way, he had come into the cave with her and began to tell his story. Beatrix loved to hear life stories, and he was a good storyteller. "I was returning home one night with my fathers fishing nets one night when it happened." Beatrix stared, wide eyed, eager to hear the rest and angry at his hesitance. "What happened? The attack? Go on!" Her stomach rumbled, but she paid it no mind. There was a story to listen to. | |

| Gael sighed. He was beginning to regret this, but he had made a decision and intended to see it through until the end.
"It was dark and I could hear little but the crashing of the waves upon the shore and the moon had passed behind a cloud and to make matters worse, the rain was pounding so heavily that I could hardly see a foot in front of me..." He paused for a moment, pretending to be fiddling with a spot of dirt on his left boot. "I- I... paused for a moment to get my bearings just as the moon came out." A shudder ran through his body and he stopped again. "It was only then that I realized that I was standing about ten feet away from an enormous wolf." He shuddered again and his throat felt as if it had suddenly closed. Nevertheless, he went doggedly on. Even if he hadn't promised to tell her his tale, he had started the telling and couldn't stop it now. "I was all but unarmed," he said, his voice sounding odd. "There wasn't time to run... I remember- I remember that it turned to look at me and I could have sworn I saw horror register in its eyes before the mania closed on it again." Eyes fixed suddenly on hers like a man possessed, he somehow found the will to continue as long buried images from that night rose to greet him from the grave. "I lost consciousness after about a minute. The last thing I remembered was receiving this." He gestured to his face. "The blow knocked me out and I awoke the next morning to a sun that seemed to burn far to brightly... Blood covered that side of my face, I couldn't feel my right arm at all below the elbow, and the rest of me was so bloodied and bruised that I could hardly draw breath... I still have the scars. When the search party found me, they thought I was dead... but when they realized I was alive soon enough..." He stopped again, staring ahead into the nothing. "I told them to kill me."

| "Well, clearly they didn't, and that is much to my happiness." Beatrix gave yet another of her warm smiles. Then Beatrix thought of something. What if he asks of my past? Beatrix nearly gasped aloud. He can't know my story; his story may be twisted, but mine is just strange! I can't explain what I am--I've never had to before. And such a long story I have! And not interesting in the least. No--I cannot tell him my story. I must avoid it, no matter the cost. Hopefully he won't even ask. "What happened then? Do go on." | |

| "There isn't much more to tell," Gael said. This telling was starting to really weigh on him. He wished that he could stop before he did or said anything stupid. He ran a hand through his mane of tangled, black hair, looking distracted. After another pause, he began yet again.
"My parents were real good to me... The reasoning they had was that I was old enough to take responsibility of the curse for myself; so I did. I had always been a wanderer, but now I was careful to travel almost constantly so as not to be anywhere close enough to the village to hurt anybody... or at least... not anybody that I knew or cared about." He shuddered. But he had hurt others; nameless people that had turned up missing, and then found dead to a werewolf's brutal mauling. "The first year was the worst, I hardly knowing what I was doing and everyone either terrified of me or resentful of the fact that I hadn't been killed yet like I first begged. My sister, Adir, was scared of me too at first." He smiled rather wryly and gestured to his face. "I think that the scars were what did it. After a while, she got over her fear and nicknamed me 'Wolfy'." Gael shook his head at the memory of his little sister. Oh, Adir. Of all people, she hadn't deserved death.
"When I was sixteen... the villager's still tolerated me... but only just... Things started really heating up... and the results weren't good." He stopped again, head bowed. Memories washed over him. His parents, his sister; dead, and all his fault too. They hadn't deserved to die, not like that. Not because of him.

| Beatrix stared. She stared at his tangled black hair, at his sad eyes and haunted face, at his emaciated frame. She stared at his seemingly vulnerable face, made hard and cold by what he thought he was. She stared at the three pale scars on his left cheek, a reminder of what he had become, there to follow him into every thought, every action. She should probably stop asking questions. But of course she didn't. "Tell me about your sister, and what the village did to her." Beatrix's golden eyes sparkled, but her face was like stone. | |

| Gael shivered. Adir... She was so young; only thirteen. Why was fate so cruel?
"The children were the first," he said softly. "People don't like that which they cannot understand, what they fear... and often it leads to open violence. Adir's friends were scared; they left her for fear that I would end up hurting them..." He looked up suddenly at Beatrix desperately. "Trix, I swear, I never hurt anyone there. I was happy to take abuse, but why'd they have to hurt her too? Sweet Goddess!" And that exclamation betrayed long-buried grief and pain as he buried his face despairingly in his hands. After a moment, he regained control of himself and his hands dropped. His voice was hollow when he spoke again. "I found her dead body one day in an alley... She had been stoned to death."

| Beatrix's emotions stirred when Gael spoke of his sister. This was abnormal; she was not the emotional type, nor was she prone to feeling pity for the human's short lives. But this man had made her unhappy. She couldn't have that. She must make him feel better. Then Beatrix did something she had never done before. She had never even considered it, it was something only the humanoid creatures did, the ones that developed particular attachments to other humanoid creatures. She leaned over closer to the strange, tall werewolf, she spread her arms wide, and she wrapped them around the man's body, holding him. She held him for only a few seconds; her solitary nature allowed her no more, and when she was done she said "I'm so sorry. The villagers were wrong. They shouldn't fear you, they should learn to understand you and see you as another human. You are not a Monster. A monster is someone who willingly destroys someones joy. The villagers were monsters. You are not a monster." Beatrix gazed meaningfully into his deep brown eyes. She stared for a moment or two, and then broke the contact, adding bitterly "That is something I will never understand. That which humans do not understand is that which humans fear. It is ridiculous. They need to learn to learn, instead of learning to hate and fear." | |
